Appeal of the Hungarian National Committee of ICOMOS

The Hungarian National Committee of ICOMOS has been astonished to learn from the press the decision to build a 73 meter-high skyscraper in Parndorf, Austria.

The planned hotel building incorporating 77 rooms would seriously damage the Fertő/Neusiedler Lake area inscribed on the World Heritage List as a remarkable cultural landscape. The sight of the planned high-rise building would visually destroy the nature reserve of Fertő Lake and its boundaries. After the examples of Vienna and Cologne, another high-rise building is endangering a World Heritage Site.

The Fertő / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape was submitted for inscription as a joint effort and commitment of Austria and Hungary. The Hungarian National Committee of ICOMOS rejects all kinds of transformations damaging the common World Heritage Site and demands to stop the investment immediately.
